Sam Horn's Annual Home Run Hitting Contest
On July 19th, Mulligan's Island in conjunction with former Red Sox slugger and current NESN analyst Sam Horn held the first annual Sam Horn Home Run Hitting Contest. The half day event started at 10:00am but some eager fans arrived as early as six in the morning. By mid-day Mulligan's Island had been overtaken by more the 1,000 die-hard Red Sox fans, each hoping to meet former and current members of the Red Sox. Players that were in attendance were Damien Jackson, Todd Walker, Kevin Millar, Rich Gedman, coaches Dallas Williams and Cool Papa Jack, and of course Sam Horn himself.
Both adults and children took part in various skills competitions including "swinging for the fences" in the Home Run contest, fielding grounders in the defensive drills competition, and swinging the irons in the Pitch n' Putt tournament. Former Red Sox catcher Rich Gedman put on a catching clinic for the young backstops of the future. Sam Horn launched a towering shot in a HR hitting display for the fans. Kevin Millar, who wasn't to be outdone,
stepped into the batter box and sent a ball practically into Narragansett Bay!
By late afternoon thousands of fans had autographs signed, consumed food and beverage and enjoyed what turned out to be a beautiful day at Mulligan's Island. Sam's Around The Horn Sports Center which put on the event donated a portion of their proceeds to the American Heart Association. We look forward to 2004 when Sam's event returns again to Mulligan's Island.
