Mulligan's Island - Mini Golf

July 28th, 2003

Cranston, RI - Monday July 28th, 2003 was The Golf Channel's Drive, Chip, and Putt Junior Golf Skills Competition held at Mulligan's Island. The Golf Channel travels around the North America to 100 cities holding the competition before finalists meet in Orlando, Florida to compete for the distinction of the Nation's most talented young golfers. On what turned out to be one of the most beautiful afternoons of the summer, 120 contestants from the ages of 7-12 years of age battled for the right to move on to the regionals next month.

The skills competition consists of three activities; driving the ball the farthest, chipping the ball the closest to the pin, and putting in the fewest amount of strokes. The driving competition was on the Mulligan's Island driving range, while the chipping and putting was held on the 9th hole of the Mulligan's Island Par-3 course. Many of the kids displayed extraordinary ability despite their age. Noah Walker, for example, drove the ball a whopping 260 yards and he is all of 10 years old.

Although only three competitors from the three age groups moved on, fun was had by all that attended. Along with trophies for the winners, T-shirts and Tiger Woods bobble heads were earned by all of the contestants. Pepsi provided drinks to keep the players and the crowd cool, while Nike Golf provided clubs for those who didn't bring their own set to the competition. The event was such a success we look forward to next year when the Golf Channel will return and hopefully even more competitors will vie for the honor of the areas most skilled junior golfer. Below are the winners and a collection of photos from the afternoon.
