NOTHING ‘MINI’ ABOUT THIS GOLF TOURNAMENT!

Mini RI Open and Phred’s Drug combine for children’s charity

Warwick, RIReady for more?

In 2006, the Mini Rhode Island Open – the first professional miniature golf tournament ever held in the Ocean State – made a successful debut.  Now, the event is back on the calendar, bigger and better than the inaugural event, thanks to an exciting partnership!

The 2007 Mini Rhode Island Open “merges” for this year with the 3rd annual Phred’s Drug Mini Golf Charity Classic, resulting in what promises to be the largest miniature golf tournament in New England, over two days!  The combined tournaments will fly under the Phred’s Drug Mini Golf Charity Classic banner (see logo), with the pros competing on Sunday, June 17, and the amateurs playing on Monday evening, June 18, at Mulligan’s Island in Cranston.

Like last year, this year’s professional tournament held on June 17 will have pros competing for their share of a $2000 prize purse, with $1000 going to the champion.  The pro event is once again sanctioned by the US Pro MiniGolf Association, and those who finish in the top 50 percent of the field will be eligible for entry into the 2007 USPMGA Mini Masters and Mini US Open tournaments.  The professional tournament is open to anyone who would like to “turn pro” to play for the prize money, and to all members of the USPMGA, for a $50 entry fee.  Pros will play 72 holes, with a cut (top 50% of field and ties) after 36 holes.

The amateur event will tee off on Monday evening, June 18.  It is open to players of all ages and abilities, and receives a large boost from the business community with the inclusion of Phred’s Drug of Cranston as presenting sponsor.  Tournament play will be an 18 hole, team best ball format, with teams of four players competing for the “Mikey” trophy, named in honor of Michael F. Rossi, who created the concept of the Phred’s Charity Classic.  Amateur entrants may also keep an individual score to compete for low-amateur honors.  Entry fee is $100 per team, and individuals may also enter the tournament as a single $25 entry to pair up with friends, family or complete strangers to create foursomes!

All proceeds from the pro and amateur tournaments will benefit the children of A Wish Come True, Rhode Island’s oldest wish granting organization, celebrating its 25th year of granting wishes to Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts children with life threatening illnesses.

There will be food and music, plus a raffle and silent auction on June 18, making this a fun experience for everyone!  Mulligan’s Island will be closed to the general public during the evening of June 18, but all amenities at the facility will be open for use by tournament participants and their friends and family – including batting cages, Pitch ‘N Putt, the Back Nine par-3 course, and the driving range – recently designated by Golf Range Magazine as a Top 100 Golf Range in America!  Nominal fees will apply.

All participants, professional and amateur, must be registered with their entry fees paid prior to June 17.  Tee times will be assigned and emailed to pro entrants for June 17, while amateurs will tee off on June 18 at either 6:15 or 7:30 pm.  Each entry will also receive a tournament gift!  For complete tournament details, including online registration and payment, visit the tournament website at www.minirhodeislandopen.com or www.phredsminigolf.com.  Registration forms may also be picked up at Phred’s Drug of Cranston, Mulligan’s Island or A Wish Come True, and returned to any of these locations.  All checks should be made payable to      A Wish Come True.
